About Ruth Rogers Clausen

Ruth Rogers Clausen is one of the most accomplished horticulturists I know. Coincidentally, one of the things she is really snooty about is garden gloves.  Since she loves her Womanswork gloves, and will issue a disdainful sniff about most other brands, we hit it off right away.

Ruth grew up in Wales and studied horticulture at Studley College in England. She has contributed greatly to her profession as a writer of tomes (Perennials for American Gardens, Random House; and Essential Perennials with Thomas Christopher and Alan L. Detrick, Workman); an editor of gardening magazines; and a lecturer, advisor and judge for botanical gardens and flower shows all across the country and around the world.

Ruth gardens in Easton, MD where she grows an eclectic range of plants. Her plant choices reflect those plants that do well in her region and throughout the mid Atlantic.

Ruth is also author of a popular book about deer resistant plants, published by Timber Press and titled “50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants: The Prettiest Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Shrubs that Deer Don’t Eat”

Ruth often lends her expertise to the Womanswork blog and newsletter, offering practical advice tied to the seasons.

I am writing as Program Coordinator of the Evergreen Garden Club, whose members live in northwest Washington and close in Maryland. We are looking for a speaker on shade gardens and deer resistant planting for our Tuesday, March 21, 2023 morning meeting and you were highly recommended.

I am considering incorporating herbivory ratings from your book, Deer-Resistant Native Plants for the Northeast, into ratings I have developed for northern Virginia and have questions. Would you email me so that we can discuss, please?

  3. Andrea Hancock says:

I am a program coordinator for a Garden Club in MA and was wondering if you do zoom presentations. Specifically interested in planting deer/rabbit resistant gardens as the subject. Thank you!

  4. Andrea, I will forward your request to Ruth Clausen and she will be in touch with you. She has written some books on the subject.
